We have been given a prescription book from the chemist shop of Mr. William Wright M.P.S. dating from 1921 to 1941. Mr. Wright’s chemist shop was at 100 High Street, Rushden. The book gives the patient’s name, sometimes an address and sometimes their place of work. The cost of the medication is given and the name of the doctor who prescribed it. There are a lot of well known names in the book. One entry is for Mr. Charles Thurston of Rushden Feast fame, obviously needing medication whilst in Rushden with the feast.
There are prescriptions for Liniment for Rushden Town Football Club, and for polish for the Ball Room floor at the Athletic Club in Newton Road. Several of the prescriptions are marked as poison, including one for Sanders & Sanders in Spencer Road.
Mr. Wright was also making up medication for animals including cats, dogs, horses, and cattle, so presumably there was no vet in Rushden at that time.
The shop was eventually bought by the Co-op and run as a pharmacy before they moved the business to larger premises further along the High Street to No. 74. It then became the Co-op Painting and Decorating shop.
