Having scanned all the postcards in the collection relating to Mabel Gladys Colson, I checked the museum catalogue and could see that the connection with other items donated at the same time was Emma Elizabeth Margetts.  There are several postcards signed E. E. M., sent from 55 High Street South, Rushden,  but they were sent to Mrs. F. Knight, 7 Osnaburgh Terrace, Portland Street, London N.W., all dated 1923.  There is also one addressed to Mrs. F. Knight, 47 Moor Road, Rushden from Edna postmarked August 1934.  I don’t know who Edna was.

A bit more research showed that Mabel Gladys Colson married Frank Knight in July 1916.  Sadly Frank died in July 1931 and is buried in Rushden Cemetery.  The 1939 register shows Mabel Gladys was a widow living at 47 Moor Road.  Her mother, Elizabeth, was still living at No. 49, also a widow.

Mabel Gladys and Emma Elizabeth met and became friends when they were assistant teachers at Alfred Street School.  Emma Elizabeth married Alfred Chapman Fountain in 1923 and they lived in Crabb Street, Rushden. 

Mabel Gladys and Emma Elizabeth remained friends and 4 nightdresses and 2 petticoats, part of Emma’s trousseau, were passed to Mabel Gladys.  They are now in Rushden Museum.

Mabel Gladys died in November 1976 aged 87, and was buried with Frank in Rushden Cemetery.

I still don’t know who Nellie was.

The postcards below, and the one at the top, were all sent from Emma Elizabeth to Mabel Gladys in London in 1923.
